Honest about the Symi day

A trip to Symi is not an hour on the beach. Most run six to nine hours, and we show the duration so the rest of your day still works.

The wind decides

In July and August the meltemi can change or cancel boat trips. Read the cancellation terms on the booking page before you book.

Honest answers to the questions travellers ask us most.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Symi worth it, and how long is the crossing?

Yes, it is the most-reviewed trip on Rhodes, but it is a boat day rather than a beach day. The crossing takes roughly an hour on the fastest boats and up to about two on slower cruise boats, and the listed durations run from six to nine hours. Symi is a separate island, so the time you get there depends on the boat you pick.

Do I need a tour for Lindos, or can I take the public bus?

You can take the public bus. KTEL runs services from Rhodes Town along the east coast, and the ride is roughly an hour and a half or more each way, so the day is mostly transport either way. A tour buys hotel pickup and a fixed return time. Check the current KTEL timetable, and note that the acropolis ticket is usually bought separately.

When is the best time for boat trips?

Most boat trips and the Butterfly Valley belong to the warm months, and the valley is reported to open from May to October. The meltemi, a northerly wind, blows mainly in July and August and can change or cancel fast-boat crossings for a day or two. The east coast is sheltered from it, the west coast is not, so morning departures and east-coast routes are the safer choice in high summer.

Is the Colossus of Rhodes still standing?

No. The statue fell in an earthquake in 226 BC and nothing of it survives, so no tour can show it. What you can see is the medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, with its walls, the Street of the Knights and the Palace of the Grand Master.

Do I need a rental car on Rhodes?

Not for the main trips. Buses and tours with hotel pickup cover Rhodes Town, Lindos and the east coast. A car makes sense for the inland villages and the far south, where Prasonisi lies about 85 km from Rhodes Town, and for a free day on the beaches of the west coast.

Can I visit Turkey from Rhodes on a day trip?

Yes. The listings include a day trip to Marmaris by high-speed boat from Rhodes. It crosses a border, and the booking page states which documents you need. Offers that start in Marmaris and bring you to Rhodes begin on the other side, so they do not appear on this site.

How much should I budget for tours?

The range is wide. Bus days to Lindos and the Butterfly Valley sit at the low end, speedboat and all-inclusive cruises cost several times as much, and private boats cost more again and are usually priced per boat. The exact starting price of each category is shown on its page, from the current listings.
